With 2024 underway, Kansas City eagerly anticipates the conclusion of Main Street Extension construction and the arrival of eight new streetcars.
The arrival of Kansas City’s newest streetcar, #807, from vehicle manufacturer CAF USA, Inc. arrived in Kansas City on Friday, February 2, 2024. Check out photos and videos, including drone footage of #807’s arrival on X, Facebook, and Instagram.
This is the first of eight additional streetcar vehicles needed to support operation of the Main Street and Riverfront Extensions, ultimately connecting the University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC) to Berkley Riverfront. CAF, along with Silk Road Transport, delivered KC Streetcar vehicle #807 more than 1,000 miles from Elmira, N.Y. to Kansas City, Missouri. The KC Streetcar vehicles are picking up the numbering where it left off with the 801-806 streetcar series. The new vehicles will be numbered 807-814.
“As we continue to grow transportation opportunities across our community, I am thrilled to welcome our newest Kansas City Streetcar, marking yet another step toward the completion of our transformational Streetcar expansion project,” said Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas. “Investing in reliable and efficient public transportation is investing in mobility and opportunity for all Kansas Citians—creating thousands of good-paying jobs along the way. I look forward to the incredible and transformational impact the extension will have on Kansas City.”
“The delivery of KC Streetcar #807 represents the first of many exciting milestones anticipated for 2024 as we ready our system for expanded service to UMKC in 2025 and prepare for a new generation of transit connectivity in Kansas City,” said Tom Gerend, Executive Director, KC Streetcar Authority.
KCPD assisted with traffic control during the delivery and unloading of KC Streetcar #807. Once on-site, the streetcar was offloaded onto the tracks located along 2nd Street just east of Oak Street and transported to the Kite Singleton Vehicle Maintenance Facility located at 600 East 3rd Street. KC Streetcar #807 will undergo shop testing for several days before it starts testing on the tracks.
As with the original streetcars, each new streetcar is a bi-directional vehicle approximately 77 feet long, weighs 78,000 lbs., and has a maximum rider capacity of 150. It offers level boarding at all 16 stops, making it easier for bike riders, wheelchair users, and strollers to board and disembark from the streetcar. New streetcars will come with new interior displays showing next stop arrivals, an enhanced on-board video surveillance system, and other system upgrades including exterior lights, air compressors, train-to-wayside communication system, and an advanced driver assist system (ADAS). The remaining new CAF-manufactured streetcar vehicles will arrive in Kansas City approximately every 4 weeks.
