The KC Streetcar is currently hiring for Full-time and Part-time Streetcar Operators in the KC Streetcar operations department managed by Herzog Transit Services

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

*This is a non-exhaustive overview of the job duties for this position.

  • This position is responsible for the operation of the streetcar in a safe and efficient manner within established rules, schedules, regulations, procedures and providing professional and courteous customer service.
  • Reports for duty at the Singleton Yard KC Streetcar Vehicle Maintenance Facility or any other designated location along the system in the prescribed uniform with a neat and well-groomed appearance.
  • New hires should expect to work late nights, weekends and holidays exclusively as seniority dictates. Maybe required to work on an “on-call” basis.
  • Participates in HTSI provided training programs for operating rules, track access, standard operating procedures, safety, vehicle operations, minor troubleshooting and basic customer service.
  • May work with vehicle manufacturer to provide movement of vehicles within the yard and shop area and on the mainline or mainline extension (s) for vehicle burn-in and pre-revenue operations training.
  • Operates Streetcars on embedded tracks within the vehicle maintenance facility, yard storage area and main line in accordance with established operating schedules.
  • Informs operations supervisors of operating status of equipment and any observed defects.
  • Performs pre-departure inspection in accordance with established procedures for streetcar preparation for service and reports any observations to supervisory staff.
  • Observes and immediately reports to supervisory staff of road vehicles that possibly block or otherwise prohibit movement of the streetcar along the streetcar mainline.
  • Observes and reports work being performed in or near the track that appears to be unsafe and without proper track access authority.
  • Positions streetcars within the maintenance facility, yard tracks or car wash as directed.
  • Receives and transmits messages by hand-held or train-based two-way radio for operational authorization to depart/enter yard storage area and when entering/leaving the mainline track.
  • Inspects the streetcar at terminals and while changing operating ends, checks for debris and newspapers left behind by passengers and discards in proper waste receptacles, or passes on to field supervisory staff.
  • Observes and reports any defects or unsafe conditions with regard to movement along the track or overhead contact wire (OCS) obstructions that can prohibit streetcar movement.
  • Ensures that streetcar station stop announcements are being made via the pre-programmed public address announcement system and manually intervenes if required.
  • Provides manual on-board announcements at regular intervals informing passengers of incidents that cause delays to streetcar movement.
  • Prepares daily trip reports and defect reports upon completion of duty.
  • Regular and predictable attendance and punctuality are a requirement for this position.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Candidates must be at least 25 years of age.
  • High School diploma or GED.
  • Rail Transit Operator experience is considered a plus.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license with a good driving record for the past 5 years.

 

Pre-Employment Requirements:

  • Subject to pre-employment background check and motor vehicle report review.
  • Maintain a valid driver’s license and endorsements as required per position.
  • Pass pre-employment DOT physical, medical evaluation, and drug screen due to the safety sensitive nature of this position.
  • This position requires you to pass and maintain a DOT medical evaluation to drive a Herzog commercial vehicle.
  • Must successfully pass color/vision examinations as required by the position.
  • Successfully complete and maintain any required safety certification and testing on an annual basis.

These positions will report directly to the Director of Maintenance.  This person will need to be highly detailed and organized. Computer proficiencies will need to be demonstrated as a minimum for the required programs listed below.

 

Qualifications:

  • High School diploma or GED.
  • Visual activity and hearing required.
  • Ability to follow instructions furnished in written and oral form.
  • Must be fluent in the English language.
  • Ability to understand and follow safety rules, work rules and procedures.
  • Must be dependable and report to work at the scheduled time and seldom absent from work. Depended upon to complete work in a timely, accurate, and thorough manner and is conscientious, about assignments.
  • Ability to work well with others.
  • Ability to complete tasks within a specified time period.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Ability to work flexible shifts, schedules and overtime.
  • Ability to perform quality work efficiently with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to accept constructive criticism.
  • Knowledge of the standard practices, methods, tools, and equipment of the mechanics trade.
  • Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the mechanic’s trade.
  • Ability to assist in the maintenance and repair of all types of equipment from Streetcars to facility repairs.
  • Ability to use and care for tools and equipment used in the maintenance and repair of such equipment.
  • Able to follow the directions of those above them
  • Able to work around high voltage.
  • Able to visually distinguish colors – red, blue, green, yellow and distinguish auditory signals

  • Restock passenger report cards and safety sensitive literature on cars.
  • Perform all duties in conformance to appropriate safety and security standards.
  • Wash exterior of streetcars when scheduled.
  • Cleaning of the track, track slab, and track flange ways.
  • Interfaces with Kansas City Streetcar representatives and passengers.
  • Interfaces with other operation and mechanical employees.
  • Assisting with inventory shipping, receiving and organization.
  • Regular and predictable attendance and punctuality are a requirement for this position.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assist with Company’s safety policies and programs, and make revisions as needed to maintain its compliance with applicable regulations.
  • Manage the track access program.
  • Participate in all internal and external safety audits, including, but not limited to; facilities, property, vehicles, platforms, ROW, plans, programs and employee files.
  • Work with HTSI managers, KCSA, KCMO, & MODOT on immediate corrections, findings and corrective action plans.
  • Work with managers and supervisors in managing hazardous working conditions and eliminating unsafe employee activities. Investigate and recommend improvements in processes, design, procedures and operations to minimize potential hazards.
  • Assist managers and supervisors in investigating and documenting all property damage, personal injuries, safety violations and unsafe conditions and activities.
  • Review documentation to ensure that all required records and reports are complete, accurate and submitted per established procedures.
  • Assist in the development, implementation and coordination of the safety training programs. This may include employee orientations, operator certification, track access, specific program trainings, monitoring and assisting in weekly safety meetings, supervisor trainings and accident awareness trainings.
  • Collect reports required for records and evaluations of performance of Safety and Accident Prevention Programs.
  • Ensure employee understanding of and compliance with all company policies and procedures.
  • Ensure that all sub-contractors employees comply with job-site safety rules and regulations.
  • Obtain and keep current streetcar operator certification.
  • Assist in maintaining employee training records in accordance with KC Streetcar Training Plan and FTA regulations.
  • Study and provide current information on government regulations for Occupational Safety and Health (OSHA), Federal Transit Administration (FTA) and keep Management and Supervisors advised of revisions of new regulations applicable to company activities.
  • Attend meetings and conferences required by the company, and other organizations considered advantageous to the company’s interest.
  • Must have the ability and availability to respond immediately to emergency or problem calls, and to be on call twenty-four (24) hours a day, seven (7) days a week.
  • Regular and predictable attendance and punctuality are a requirement for this position.
