The KC Streetcar project was honored with Best Transit Project of the Year during the Engineering News-Record (ENR) Midwest Best Projects ceremony in Chicago. Close to 100 entries were received, from construction projects completed in Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Missouri, Iowa or Kentucky.

Additionally, the project received the 2016 American Institute of Architects (AIA) KC Community Impact of the Year award at the December 6 AIA KC annual meeting, which recognizes projects that make contributions to the design profession and the community as a whole.  The KC Streetcar was also honored at the Mid-America Regional Council’s 2016 Sustainable Success Stories project held on December 8 at the Kauffman Foundation. The annual Sustainable Success Stories event is part of an ongoing community dialogue focused on building a better understanding of sustainable practices that have the potential to transform our community.

The KC Streetcar provides a free, public transit option for those seeking access to downtown amenities, jobs and activities by connecting downtown Kansas City from Union Station to the River Market. During the first five months of operation, the KC Streetcar carried passengers on more than 1,000,000 trips, adding more than 15 percent to the region’s total monthly transit system usage.

To date, the KC Streetcar project has received eight honors and distinctions highlighting excellence in design, construction, community impact and sustainability.  A full listing can be found on the website, www.kcstreetcar.org.

The KC Streetcar project team includes the Kansas City Streetcar Authority (Transit Agency); the City of Kansas City, Mo. (Owner); the General Contractor KC Streetcar Constructors, a joint venture of Herzog Contracting Corp. and Stacy & Witbeck; HDR Engineering Inc. (Lead Design Firm); and Burns & McDonnell (Consulting Engineer).  Included in this team are countless contractors and subcontractors that all made, and continue to make, the KC Streetcar a success.
