Kansas City Scores Big with Soccer Fans and the KC Streetcar

The KC Streetcar completed 838,826 passenger trips between June 11 and July 11, 2026, breaking a 4-week ridership record, as residents and visitors relied on public transit to experience FIFA World Cup events and explore destinations throughout Kansas City. That is more than many U.S. streetcar systems carry in a full year. 

The tournament period marked the busiest in KC Streetcar history, including a new all-time daily ridership record of 55,973 passengers on July 11. The streetcar also recorded its five highest ridership days ever, all occurring during FIFA Fan Festival events. Average daily ridership reached 27,059, increasing to 33,689 on FIFA Fan Festival days. These ridership counts reflect streetcar passenger trips only and do not include the “Streetcar Link” bus trips that also occurred during those days.

Throughout the month, the KC Streetcar worked alongside regional transit partners, including the Kansas City Area Transportation Authority (KCATA), to safely and efficiently move hundreds of thousands of residents and visitors throughout Kansas City. To meet increased demand on FIFA Fan Festival days, transit service was significantly expanded. The KC Streetcar operated 9 to 12 streetcars during peak festival hours, while KCATA deployed 6 to 8 supplemental RideKC “Streetcar Link” buses to provide additional capacity along the streetcar corridor. 

When needed, service hours were also extended to accommodate returning soccer fans after FIFA World Cup matches at Kansas City Stadium.  The combination of record event ridership and strong everyday travel highlights the KC Streetcar’s growing role as the spine of Kansas City’s regional transit system.

While FIFA Fan Festival at the National World War I Museum & Memorial generated significant streetcar ridership, travel data shows that approximately 75% of all June trips were to and from destinations other than FIFA Fan Festival. The data underscores strong, systemwide demand across the entire streetcar route, demonstrating that public transit is serving both major events and everyday travel needs.

Teamwork

Despite serving an unprecedented number of passengers, the KC Streetcar maintained exceptional service throughout the FIFA World Cup, with average wait times of five minutes or less while delivering safe, reliable operations.

Over the month-long tournament, there were no major safety incidents on board streetcars or at streetcar stops. This success reflects years of planning and investment in safety, security, and customer service. In preparation for the FIFA World Cup, the KC Streetcar Authority expanded its safety and security team to 28 members and deployed dedicated Streetcar Ambassadors at high-volume stations throughout the route.

Streetcar Ambassadors played a critical role in managing passenger flow, assisting riders, and creating a friendly experience for residents and visitors alike. Collectively, ambassadors contributed more than 1,680 hours of on-the-ground support during the FIFA World Cup, helping ensure efficient operations while enhancing the customer experience.
