Fall 2026 Track Work

Plan Ahead: Downtown KC Streetcar Service Adjustment Oct. 12–16, 2026

As part of KC Streetcar’s capital maintenance program, crews will perform track slab repairs in the River Market/City Market area that will require a temporary downtown streetcar service adjustment. Public transit service will still be provided on the downtown route with “Streetcar Link” buses.

Between Monday, Oct. 12 through Friday, Oct. 16, “Streetcar Link” buses will replace downtown streetcar service to accommodate track maintenance on 5th Street between Delaware and Walnut streets.

Full KC Streetcar service is expected to resume Friday, Oct. 16, once work is completed. All work is weather dependent.

What Riders Need to Know

Full KC Streetcar service will conclude at 10 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 11 to accommodate the planned work. At that time, 5th Street between Delaware Street and Walnut Street will temporarily close to all through traffic, but will reopen to westbound only traffic by 7 a.m. Monday, Oct. 12.  While track work is in progress, the City Market streetcar stop will be closed.

“Streetcar Link” bus service on the downtown route (Main Street between the Riverfront and Union Station) will begin 5:00am on Monday, October 12.

Streetcar service will continue as usual on the southern end of the route between Union Station and UMKC, with regular 10-minute frequency.

5th Street Traffic Changes:

  • Oct. 11, 10 p.m. – Oct. 12, 7 a.m.: 5th Street between Delaware Street and Walnut Street will be closed to all traffic.
  • Oct. 12–16, 7 a.m. – 7 p.m.: 5th Street between Delaware Street and Walnut Street will be reduced to one-way westbound traffic.
  • Oct. 12–16, 7 p.m. – 7 a.m.: 5th Street between Delaware Street and Walnut Street will be closed to all through traffic.

“Streetcar Link” bus service

Three Streetcar Link buses will operate between the Riverfront and Union Station, with service approximately every 12–15 minutes. Buses will serve designated streetcar stops (except the City Market stop), operate 5:00am – Midnight, and be fare-free.

Riders traveling past Union Station (north or south) will need to transfer between the streetcar and Streetcar Link buses. Passengers will board at the Union Station northbound stop to ride streetcars south between Union Station and UMKC. Passengers will board Streetcar Link buses at the Union Station southbound stop to ride north between Union Station and the Riverfront. Signage will be posted in the area to direct riders to the correct boarding locations.

Since buses have less capacity than streetcars, riders should plan ahead and allow extra time for their trip.

Important River Market Boarding Information

At the River Market northbound and southbound stops, near 3rd Street and Grand Blvd., passengers will need to access the “Streetcar Link” buses at the curb rather than from the existing streetcar platforms. This is necessary because buses have doors on the right side, while these streetcar stops board from the left side. Signage will be posted in the area to direct riders to the correct boarding locations.

Around-the-Clock Work to Restore Service

Crews will work 24 hours a day to complete the repairs and return full streetcar service as quickly as possible. Demolition activities are scheduled to take place Sunday night and Monday during the day.
