The first station shelters for the KC Streetcar Main Street Extension arrived in midtown the week of June 24, 2024. The new Union Station Northbound Streetcar Stop at Pershing Road & Main Street was the first of eight platforms to receive a shelter.
In addition to the Union Station Northbound stop, the following streetcar stops will receive shelters over the next week and a half, weather dependent:
• WWI Museum & Memorial Northbound and Southbound at 27th and Main Streets
• Armour Southbound at Armour Road & Main Street
• Southmoreland Southbound at 43rd & Main Streets
• Art Museums Northbound and Southbound at 45th & Main Streets
The remaining standard-sized shelters will be installed in July and the larger extended center platform shelters, which are the Plaza Transit Center and UMKC stops, will be installed later this summer.
“The installation of the station shelters along Main Street is a significant project milestone and yet another example of our notable progress as we push to open the KC Streetcar Main Street Extension in 2025,” said Tom Gerend, Executive Director, KC Streetcar Authority.
The Main Street Extension streetcar shelters will feature the standard blue frames, acrylic canopy panels, upgraded lighting, and hardware, closely resembling the design of the downtown streetcar stops. Station stop markers, which include the Real Time Arrival (RTA) signs, will be installed later this summer. Additional items such as the shelter glass, windscreens, benches, trash cans, and RTA message boards will be installed later this year, near the end of project construction.
The standard shelters are 8 feet tall and 15 feet wide and each shelter frame and roof weighs 3,500 pounds. They are made with steel and aluminum and feature edge-lit glass panels, acrylic roof, and a wood bench. The shelters for the Main Street Extension were fabricated by Decamil and installed by Kansas City-based Infinity Sign Systems.
