KC Streetcar ridership has surged to record-breaking levels following the October 24th opening of the Main Street Extension. Even with rainy weather and cool temperatures dampening Kansas City, streetcar ridership drew nearly 35,000 passenger trips during the three-day opening weekend.
November 2025 has seen the highest monthly ridership in system history, demonstrating that the expanded 5.7-mile rail route from the River Market to UMKC is attracting unprecedented demand for fare-free, frequent, and reliable public transit. In November, the KC Streetcar carried 341,922 passenger trips, bringing the 2025 year-to-date total to 1,799,708 trips. Click here for more detailed ridership counts throughout November.
This represents 2.5x jump to last November’s ridership. November also delivered the single highest ridership day of 2025, with 19,761 trips on November 22, and a daily average of 11,397 passenger trips. The KC Streetcar is now accounting for approximately 30% of all transit trips in the Kansas City region.
“The response to the expanded streetcar system has been extraordinary,” said Tom Gerend, Executive Director, KC Streetcar Authority. “Ridership has already exceeded system forecasts and is a testament to the value of this newfound connectivity. We fully expect significant ridership growth as we move into 2026 and further demonstrate the value, opportunity, and convenience the KC Streetcar can bring.”
Daily average ridership more than doubled immediately after the Main Street Extension opened. Average weekday (Monday – Friday) ridership in the weeks prior to October 24th was approximately 4,000 passenger trips. Once the Main Street Extension opened, that average weekday ridership number ballooned to 10,000 trips. The same was seen for weekend ridership, with the daily average doubling to 14,000 trips since the opening of the Main Street Extension.

Travel patterns have also changed since the opening of the extension. The KC Streetcar has consistently been busy Fridays through Sundays. With the expanded route, service is experiencing sustained peak periods throughout the week, Monday through Thursday, 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.

With the full extension open, weekday ridership is now distributed across the entire corridor. The highest percentage of weekday ridership occurs in midtown and the Plaza/UMKC area, reflecting strong demand for connections to neighborhoods, universities, workplaces, entertainment districts, and cultural destinations.

Expanded Operations to Meet Demand
To keep pace with surging ridership, the KC Streetcar has expanded service from a 3–4 streetcar rotation serving downtown to 7–8 streetcars operating daily on the full system. During peak periods, the system operates up to 9 streetcars to reduce wait times and maintain reliability.
