Back on Track Ahead of Schedule

Track work completed ahead of schedule

October 15, 2026

Full KC Streetcar service between the Riverfront and UMKC is back rolling following the successful completion of planned track slab reconstruction on 5th Street in the City Market.

Crews worked night and day since Sunday night to complete the work ahead of schedule, allowing streetcars to return to normal operations earlier than anticipated.

The work involved removing targeted sections of the track slab along 5th Street between Delaware and Walnut streets, resetting the existing rail, and pouring new concrete to secure the track. Following successful Systems Integrated Testing early Thursday morning, the route was certified and cleared to safely resume full streetcar service. While work was underway, downtown streetcar service was replaced with “Streetcar Link” buses between Union Station and the Riverfront. Streetcar service between Union Station and UMKC remained unchanged.

“Completing this work ahead of schedule reflects the dedication and coordination of our team, crews, and project partners. We never want to disrupt streetcar service and appreciate our riders’ patience during this time. Like all infrastructure, our system requires routine maintenance and we’re committed to keeping it reliable and safe for Kansas Citians for years to come,” said Tom Gerend, Executive Director of the KC Streetcar Authority.
