Track Tie-in Construction

The KC Streetcar team reached a major milestone in its Main Street Extension project by connecting the extension track with the downtown route. In order to complete these critical tie-in construction activities, downtown KC Streetcar service was temporarily suspended for approximately three weeks starting on September 30, 2024. This construction activity represents a key step in extending the KC Streetcar system and bringing enhanced transit access to more of Kansas City.

The temporary service suspension began on September 30, 2024, and lasted approximately three weeks (completed ahead of schedule). All work and scheduling were dependent on weather and other unforeseen circumstances. During this period, the KC Streetcar Constructors operated in 24-hour shifts, including weekend work, to complete the necessary construction.

RIDE KC BUS SERVICE PROVIDED DURING THIS TIME

To ensure transit services continue, a dedicated “Streetcar Link” bus service was deployed on the route, maintaining public transportation coverage along the streetcar route throughout the temporary suspension. While KC Streetcar service was temporarily suspended, we operated Ride KC buses on the streetcar route. These buses were free to ride, stopped at designated streetcar stops, and operated with regular streetcar hours. The service frequency was 10-15 minutes.

WHY THE SERVICE SUSPENSION WAS NECESSARY

This service suspension was necessary in order to connect the existing downtown streetcar system to the Main Street Extension tracks. Other work that took place during the service shut down included:

  • Removal of the existing crossover north of Pershing Road.
  • Replacement of expansion joints on the Main Street Viaduct/Bridge.
  • Construction of new track near the Pershing Road crossover.
  • Rail welding to connect the existing line with the new Pershing Crossover.
  • Pouring the final bridge deck on the Main Street viaduct.
  • Adjustments to the Overhead Catenary System (OCS).
  • Installation of real-time arrival signs.
  • Finalization of the new Union Station Northbound platform and shelter.
