Back in Service

KC Streetcar service resumed September 13 ahead of schedule

The KC Streetcar is back in service! After 5 days of preventative track maintenance activities and Riverfront Extension overhead wire work, streetcars started rolling through downtown first thing Saturday morning.

Since September 8, crews worked 12-hour shifts, including nights, to complete this critical work ahead of schedule. Favorable weather conditions also played a key role, especially for concrete pouring.

Throughout this week crews completed:

  • Installation of expansions joints on Delaware Street between Independence Avenue and 7th Street.
  • Reconstruction of track slab on Delaware Street.
  • Installation of new roadway markings to improve motorist and streetcar safety along Delaware Street between Independence Avenue and 7th Street.
  • Mill and overlay of the intersection of 3rd Street and Grand Boulevard.
  • A wide variety of overhead wire installation related to the Riverfront Extension project on Grand Boulevard between 2nd and 3rd Street, and near the KC Streetcar maintenance facility.

Between September 8 – 14, a dedicated “Streetcar Link” bus service was deployed, maintaining public transportation coverage along the streetcar route throughout the temporary suspension. This bus service operated during regular streetcar hours with frequencies of approximately 15-20 minutes.
