Jan 27 – Temporary Service Suspension

With the KC Streetcar Riverfront Extension more than 50% complete already, the next phase of major track construction will commence at the end of January 2025. As part of this phase of construction, the KC Streetcar will temporarily suspend service for approximately 2 weeks starting on January 27, 2025.

This service suspension is necessary in order to connect the existing downtown streetcar system to the Riverfront Extension tracks. Work will include:

• Remove the existing rail switch located at the corner of 3rd Street & Grand Boulevard.
• Construct new equilateral track at 3rd Street & Grand Boulevard.
• Connect the existing line to the recently installed Riverfront Extension track.

Ride KC Bus Bridge Route: January 27, 2025

RideKC Bus Bridge Service During Streetcar Service Suspension

While KC Streetcar service is temporarily suspended, Ride KC buses will operate on the streetcar route. This service is similar to the bus service provided in fall 2024. These buses will operate with regular streetcar hours and stop at all streetcar stops EXCEPT River Market North at 3rd Street & Grand Boulevard. The service frequency will be 15-20 minutes. Both boarding and exiting at Union Station will happen from the Union Station Southbound Streetcar stop.

The “Streetcar Link” Bus will route through the City Market during this time. Once a northbound bus leaves the City Market stop at 5th & Walnut Streets, it will travel north (turn left) on Walnut Street through the City Market and travel west (turn left) on 3rd Street. River Market/City Market riders will only be able to access the buses from the City Market stop at 5th & Walnut Streets and the River Market West stop at 4th & Delaware Streets during this time.

Traffic Impacts:

• Grand Boulevard closed between 2nd Street and 3rd Street.  Access to Chinatown Market is available via Walnut Street and 2nd Street.
• 3rd Street closed from Grand Boulevard to Walnut Street. This includes the intersection of 3rd Street and Grand Boulevard. 
• Westbound traffic on 3rd Street closed from Oak Street to Grand Boulevard. Access to the City Market will remain.

Riverfront Extension Work: January 20 – April 30, 2025

The following schedule is subject to change, and are weather and unforeseen circumstances
dependent. This work includes installing rail switches/turnouts, building track, connecting the new system to the existing streetcar, and building the new streetcar stop platform at 3rd Street and Grand Boulevard.

January 20-April 30, 2025 – Grand Boulevard Closure between 2nd and 3rd Streets
On January 20, Grand Boulevard will close between 2nd Street and 3rd Street and will remain closed for the duration of this work.

Starting approximately January 27 – Downtown KC Streetcar Service Suspension, 3rd Street Closure
On January 27, the downtown KC Streetcar will temporarily suspend service for approximately two weeks for track construction. Third Street will also be closed between Walnut and Grand.

March 3-April 30, 2025 – Grand Boulevard/Berkley Parkway bridge closed
On March 3, crews will begin the final bridge closure to install track on the bridge and complete all track work for the project.
