Kansas City welcomes Streetcar #801, more than 50 years after the last streetcar ride.
WHAT: The arrival of Kansas City’s first streetcar, #801, from vehicle manufacturer CAF USA, Inc.
The new KC Streetcar vehicles, which are modern, sleek, climate-controlled and Wi-Fi enabled, are picking up the numbering where it left off more than 50 years ago with the 725-799 streetcar series. The new vehicles are known as the 801-804 series.
WHEN: Monday, November 2, 2015. Estimated arrival mid-morning. *Subject to change. Details will be posted on twitter (www.twitter.com/kcstreetcar).
WHO: CAF, along with Silk Road Transport, will deliver KC Streetcar vehicle #801 more than 1,000 miles from Elmira, N.Y. to Kansas City, Missouri. This is the first of four streetcar vehicles that CAF is manufacturing for Kansas City. Silk Road Transport is based in Arkport, New York, and specializes in transporting specialized cargo, specifically for the mass transit industry.
WHERE: The public and media are invited to watch the arrival of KC Streetcar #801. A safe viewing area will be set up within the northern half of the KC Area Transportation Authorities’ RideKC Park & Ride lot at 3rd and Grand. Additional parking is available in the Park & Ride lot, in surrounding City Market lots, and on side streets. There will be no parking along Grand Boulevard from 3rd Street to 2nd Street.
HOW: Traffic control will be provided by the Kansas City Police Department. Once on-site, the streetcar will be offloaded onto the tracks located along 2ndStreet just east of Oak Street. The streetcar will then be attached to a tow truck and pulled into the Kite Singleton Vehicle Maintenance Facility located at 600 East 3rd Street.
As Kansas City prepares for the arrival of the first streetcar vehicle, the KC Streetcar Constructors are busy testing the track, facilities, power infrastructure and communication systems associated with the streetcar project. These stand alone tests are being performed now prior to the arrival of the streetcar vehicle. Once the first streetcar vehicle arrives, integrated testing can begin shortly thereafter.
The KC Streetcar is a modern, bi-directional streetcar vehicle, approximately 77 feet long, weighs 78,000 lbs., and has a maximum rider capacity of 150. It offers level boarding at all of its 16 stops, making it easier for bike riders, wheelchairs and strollers to board and disembark from the vehicle.
