The KC Streetcar is back in service! After 11 days of intensive track construction, followed by system testing, streetcars started rolling through downtown this evening. This is following the successful completion of key track work at 3rd Street and Grand Boulevard for the Riverfront Extension. Additionally, 3rd Street has fully reopened to traffic in all directions.

Since January 27, crews worked 12-hour shifts, including weekends, to complete this critical work ahead of schedule. Favorable weather conditions also played a key role, especially for concrete pouring. During this construction period, Riverfront Extension crews completed:
“We’re excited to welcome riders back as KC Streetcar service resumes ahead of schedule,” said Tom Gerend, Executive Director of the KC Streetcar Authority. “We’re grateful for the hard work of the crews who completed this critical construction safely and efficiently and appreciate the patience and support of our riders, businesses, and downtown community as we continue building a more connected Kansas City.”
The recently completed track work represents a major milestone in extending the KC Streetcar system to the Riverfront. While service has resumed, construction in the area continues, with Grand Boulevard between 2nd and 3rd Streets remaining closed for the next several months. Drivers should use 3rd Street, Walnut Street, and 2nd Street as alternate routes. Businesses remain open, and access to Chinatown Market is available via Walnut and 2nd Street. Construction started in March 2024 on the $61M Riverfront Extension project, which will connect downtown to the Riverfront, including the newly built CPKC Stadium – home of the KC Current.
With streetcar service now fully operational, all streetcar stops—including River Market North and Union Station Northbound—are open. Riders traveling north from Union Station/Crown Center must board at the Union Station Northbound stop, located on the east side of Main Street at Pershing Road. Pedestrians should use the mid-block crosswalk or the corner crosswalk at Main and Pershing for safe access.
