KC Streetcar Receives Global Award

The Kansas City Streetcar project now holds the distinction as a global award winner.

The Kansas City Streetcar project was recently honored as Project of the Year valued at more than $50 million at the 2017 Global Light Rail Awards Celebration, the industry’s celebration of innovation and excellence.  The awards celebration was held on October 4, 2017, in London, England, and hosted by the International Light Rail Magazine, Tramways & Urban Transit.

The Kansas City Streetcar project was chosen from among all of the entries as the project considered to be the most innovative, providing direct benefits to its passengers, and which has had the greatest tangible impact on the community it serves.  The criteria of which the KC Streetcar project was judged included: Direct passenger benefit; Innovation; Added value; Value for money; and Tangible impact.

“This honor is recognition of Kansas City’s world class status,” said Mayor Sly James. “We are humbled to receive this international distinction for our KC Streetcar project, which has reimagined transit in our downtown, and reinvented the environment for residents, businesses, and visitors.”

An expert panel of judges evaluated nearly 100 entries, deliberating over a range of projects that covered customer experience, safety and technical initiatives, engineering and operational excellence, and system design.

The KC Streetcar project beat out two other transit projects for this honor: the Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) project and SETRAM – Sidi Bel Abbes Tramway Transport for Greater Manchester.

The KC Streetcar provides a free, public transit option for those seeking access to downtown amenities, jobs and activities by connecting downtown Kansas City from Union Station to the River Market. During the first 17 months of operation, the KC Streetcar carried passengers on more than 3,000,000 trips.

To date, the KC Streetcar project has received more than twelve honors and distinctions highlighting excellence in design, construction, community impact and sustainability.  A full listing can be found on the website, www.kcstreetcar.org/kc-streetcar-awards.
